Reset BIOS Password using PC CMOS Cleaner

One method for protecting a computer from settings change or settings changed by unauthorized people is by giving password on the BIOS (Basic Input Output System), or the system that was activated first and set up the hardware when the computer is turned on.

But there are times when it is a very long time, and we forget the password that we make, or we buy a laptop that turns out its BIOS has been given a password, so that when we want to re-install windows/operating system or changing the BIOS settings, we are difficult to do so.

If it happens on a desktop computer, is quite simple and easy to do. Simply turn off the computer, unplug the power and do one of the following ways:

reset BIOS

  • Remove the CMOS battery on the motherboard (like a watch battery with a diameter of about 2 cm), allow a few minutes and put it back again. or
  • Reset the BIOS by removing the special jumper on the motherboard. Its position is usually near the CMOS battery and with JMP1 or JP1 information on it.
But the problem is when this problem happens on your laptop/notebook or netbook or computer that is still under warranty. Because usually its quite risky when we have to open the laptop itself, especially if it is still under warranty. The warranty may be void because the seal have broken.

The alternative is to use a PC CMOS Cleaner program. And the good news, this program has now been released as a freeware, so we can download it and use it for free. Some of the benefits of using PC CMOS Cleaner include:
  • Displays the previous passwords
  • Removing the BIOS password - BIOS date will also be reset
  • Return the BIOS to the initial settings
This program can be used for Windows 32-bit or 64-bit, with various types of BIOS are supported, such as: AWARD, AMI, Compaq, Phoenix, Samsung, IBM, Compaq, DTK, Thinkpad, Sony, Toshiba and others.

HOW TO USE PC CMOS CLEANER TO RESET BIOS PASSWORD

Unfortunately the developer of this tool is no longer active, but we can still use this program through the emergency disk called "Ultimate Boot CD". You can find information about this CD at http://www.ultimatebootcd.com

To use of this program is quite easy, but there is a note to use it successfully, which should be able to boot it from the CD/DVD Rom. The steps are:
  1. Download Ultimate Boot CD in ISO format here
  2. Burn the ISO file to a CD-ROM, for example by using the CDBurnerXP software.
  3. Insert the CD into the CD/DVD-ROM drive, and restart the computer.
  4. Set the computer or laptop to boot from CD ROM, usually by pressing F12 (boot option).
  5. After the startup process is complete go to Start Menu - click System Tool and select PC CMOS Cleaner, then click Next.
  6. In the Step 1 windows, just click Next again

  7. In the step 2., we can choose to Reset Password BIOS only or Reset all BIOS setting including password.

  8. Restart the computer.
If a computer or laptop that we use do not have any CD/DVD-ROM drive, then we can use the USB stick (flashdisk). We can use a program like Rufus to create a bootable USB stick containing PC CMOS Cleaner, and then choose to boot the computer via a USB stick.

  3. I had to dismantle the laptop to reach CMOS. Then remove from connector and put on the laptop while not with CMOS. Put off and put back CMOS. Perfect.
