8 Ways To Fix A Computer With A Black Screen

Sometimes when you turn on your computer but nothing happens,  only the monitor will display a plain black screen. This occurs after windows successfully logged in but nothing is visible except the mouse cursor can still move freely. Unlike computer blue screen which still displays an error code on the screen, computer with a black screen error  does not display a file to analyze, no tools you can use to figure out the root cause.

If your computer become black screen, there are several problem that could be the cause, including: bad system configuration, faulty hardware like power supply and memory, failing display Adapter (VGA Card), defective third-party software, incompatibililty driver, corruption in the file system, registry or user account, malware attack etc,

How to find the cause of the computer black screen

To fix a computer that has a black screen error, we must find the cause first, not easy but there are some things that we can consider to find the cause of the black screen on the computer, including:
  • Did you install a new software, updates, or drivers to your computer?
  • Did you install a new hardware on your computer?
  • Does your computer have been transported from one place to another?
  • Does your computer have recently been shutdown in the wrong way?
  • Does your computer is showing signs of a virus?
  • Did you leave something plugged into your computer that should not be there?

How to Fix Computer Black Screen

Here are some steps that we can try to do when the computer has a black screen:

1. Check the Hardware Components

Check the hardware components that were installed, ranging from wiring up to hardware that is installed in the CPU.
  • Check the Input / Output port behind the CPU, unplug all USB device or USB cable that is stuck like a USB stick, a USB cable for Scanner, printer, external hard drive and so on.
  • Check if there are broken or bent pins in the connector like PS2 keyboard connector or connector pins on the VGA cable
  • Open the computer casing, clean the inside of the CPU, unplug and plug again the hardware such as memory and VGA card after each of its pin or socket cleaned.
  • Check the wiring, such as hard drive cable, monitor cable, and so on, tighten it and make sure it is not loose.
  • Make sure each fan (like processor fan) is working properly so there is no hardware that is overheating.
  • If necessary, you can try to replace some components that are considered problematic as memory, VGA card or Power Supply.
  • Replace the battery or reset the BIOS CMOS.

2. Enabled low resolution video or enable VGA mode


Before doing another step, try to select "Enable low resolution video" option.

The steps are:
  • Restart the computer and press the F8 key so that the Advance Boot Options menu appears as shown in the picture above.
  • Select Enable low resolution video (640x480)

3. Use “Last Know Good Configuration” boot option

The steps are:
  • Restart the computer and press the F8 key so that the Advance Boot Options menu appears as shown in the picture above.
  • Select Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
By selecting the Last Known Good Configuration option, the computer will run the last configuration when the user successfully logged on. This feature replaces the contents of the CurrentControlSet registry key with a backup copy that was last used.

3. Use option: Startup Repair pada System Recovery Tool

Startup Repair is used to diagnose and repair the damage to the computer that causes the windows could not startup.

The steps are:
  • On the Advanced Boot Options menu as shown above, select the Repair Your Computer option.
  • Then just click Next and enter your Administrator username and password if prompted until System Recovery Options screen appears as shown below:

  • If the system detects any problems it will appear as below, click Next and follow the next steps.


  • If there is no problem it will display information: "Startup repair could not detect a problem"

4. Restore Windows Settings to previous conditions using System Restore.

The steps are:
  • In the System Recovery Options menu, choose System Restore
  • then choose a restore point that available.

5.  Use Windows Safe Mode option to do some repairs.

Windows Safe Mode is the right choice to begin repairing your computer, because in this mode. computer just loads the files and drivers needed to run Windows only.

If your computer can still run in Windows Safe Mode, then the cause of the problem is not in the Windows kernel.

In Windows Safe Mode, we can try to repair the computer problem by examining:
  • System Configuration Utility
  • Device Manager
  • Uninstal System Update
  • Uninstal Software
  • Scan virus
  • Clean dan Fix Hardisk
  • Copy file yang diduga corrupt, misalnya file explorer.exe.
6. Fix Windows Black screen with fixshell

This application will reset the windows shell (graphical user interface - GUI for Microsoft Windows) and disable malware that causes the computer blackscreen.


  • Download fixshell.exe here
  • Turn on Computer, Fress F8 to boot in Advance Boot Option and select Windows Safe Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  • Run command :sfc/ scannow to fix file system and recover explorer.exe file
  • Where windows explorer can be opened than run fixshell.exe .
  • Restart your computer. 

7. Repair or Re-install Windows 

Steps to repair or reinstall the windows operating system is the last step to fix this blakscreen error. I suggest you to backup your data before reinstalling the system.
