What Is 4K TV

For those of us who are not highly technical, we may be severely perplexed by the notion of a 4K Tv. So, what is 4K TV? In very simple terms, 4K TV is an ultra HD TV that is four times as clear, and has a more detailed picture than your regular HDTV.

In more technical terms, the 4K TV has a resolution of 3840 x 2160. This gives the 4K TV a much higher resolution than it's counterpart, the regular HDTV. If you were to view the numbers sided by side, with a 3840 x 2160, the 4K TV has 8.3 million pixels, while the regular HDTV, also commonly referred to as the 1080p TV in technical circles, has about 2 million pixels. What this means is that the 4K TV has over four times the clarity, detail and sharpness when it comes to the image output that regular HDTVs.

What does this mean to you?

The art of entertainment is getter better and better by the day. Where there was just the regular silver screen, now there are 3D, 4D and even 7D cinema halls. When it comes to home entertainment, we have HDTVs, 3D TV's and everything in between. The 4k TV is another addition that brings clarity and pure viewing pleasure to your living room.

Why 4K TV's?

The very first and obvious reason is the clarity and high level of picture detail. With the 4K TV, the number 4K comes from the number of horizontal pixels as opposed to 1080p TV where this is the count of the vertical pixels. The 4K TV has about 4 times more pixels that regular HDTV. Which means you get better picture quality and more detail in every frame. With a 4K TV, you can sit up close, about half the distance required for a regular HDTV, without seeing the grids. This is particularly important in big TV's such as the 'Samsung UE55F9000', which is a 55 inch 4K TV. Obviously, this is a wonderful improvement to your viewing pleasure.

For those of us who love sitting very close to your TV, but are disgruntled by the fact that you can see the grids, with a 4K TV, you can now sit twice as close to the same size TV as you would with a HDTV. To get the full effect of a 4K screen, it needs to be large. Sharp has a 70 inch screen that allows the owner to sit only 4.3 feet away from the screen and enjoy the exquisite picture quality. This is a far cry from the required 8.6 feet needed to do the same with their 70 inch HDTV counterpart.

What is 4K TV to your pocket?

4K TV's, as would be expected, are not entirely cheap. Since the 4K technology was meant for giant televisions, the prices were ultra high as well. For example, Sony's 84 inch Ultra HDTV was worth $25,000 when it was first launched. This is more expensive than quite a number of cars.

The good news is that the prices are coming down and they are doing so rapidly. Samsung has models that go for as little as $2,500 for a 4K 48 inch Ultra HDTV, and $6,000 for a 75 inch screen. There is even rumbles of a 50 inch Ultra HDTV that will go for a little less than $1,000.

Although this is a significant drop from the $25,000 model, that is still on sale, the price is still a little bit on the higher side when compared to their HDTV counterparts that go for prices that are 50% lower than those stated above for the same specifications.

What is 4K TV to your viewing options?

Although there isn't much available in 4K format as far as programs and films are concerned, there are strides towards making this content mainstream. Broadcasting stations and movie houses are working towards availing more 4K content towards the end of 2014. This has proven problematic since, theoretically, 4k content contains 4 times the data contained in the regular HD content. This means more bandwidth, better equipment, more power and higher purchase and maintenance costs.

As far as entertainment goes, we are always looking for better and bigger screen with higher resolutions and thus better picture. What is 4K TV to the regular viewer? It is better viewing. It is as simple as that. 4K technology presents an opportunity for the average home viewer to enjoy better picture quality within their very homes. Although 4K is not yet as mainstream as it should be, there are strides towards the productions of its successor, the 8K TV. With time, home entertainment is only going to get better and better. For now, the 4K TV is at the very peak of all house hold TV's.
