1. Lack of RAM.
Slow computer due to lack of installed RAM is general problem, and already known by most computer users. For that matter try to check how much RAM already installed in the computer, for Intel Core i3 class computer installed with Windows XP OS and standard applications, better to upgrade into be at least 2 GB of RAM.
2. Too many programs are installed.
Personally I frequently find computers, especially personal computer, which had installed various programs in it, even though the programs is rarely or even never used at all.
Check for all the programs installed on the computer by clicking the “Add/Remove Programs” menu in the Control Panel and uninstall the programs that just become an "accessories"only.
3. Too many startup programs and services.
This is related to point No. 2, the more programs installed, the more programs and services that will be run when windows startup.
To disable any startup programs and services that run automatically, go to the "System Configuration Utility" by typing: “msconfig” (without the “) in the run menu, then on the serviceandstartuptab uncheck the unnecessary applications.
To see what applications are currently running, we can use the “Process Explorer” tool. With this tool we can see and disable (kill) any application that is unnecessary or suspected as a virus.
Download Process Explorer here
4. Swollen Temporary Files.
The fourth cause of a slow the computer is already swelling of temporary files (temporary). For Windows XP, the location of temporary file is in: "C:\Documents and Settings\ username\Local Settings\Temp" and "C:\WINDOWS\Temp".
To clean it, delete the files contained in both locations, or run Disk CleanUp program by clicking Start-Run, type in: "cleanmgr" and select the drive that you want to cleanup.
5. Too many programs act as “security program”.
Security programs such as antivirus and firewalls programs is an additional programthat is needed on the computer, but do not be too excessive. For example, by installing 2-3 antivirus program at the same.
For Windows security problems, the most important thing to do isan update, enable the firewall and use antivirus that does not burden the the computer, such as PCMAVantivirus, and be careful when using a USB stick/Memory Card.
6. Hard drive trouble.
Hard drive is the second component after RAM which can cause computer slowdown. Computer slowdown caused by hard drive problems, such as:
- low space on the hard drive
- fragmentedhard drive
- old hard drive, so that the rpm decreases
- hard drive error / bad sector on the hard drive
- Upgrade the hard drive capacity by adding or changing the hard drive
- Do disk defragmenter on a regular basis
- Avoid the hard drive from dust, shock and overheating.
- Repair damage to the hard drive using“checkdisk” tool.
7. The presence of viruses, malwares or spywares.
When the computer already attacked by viruses or malwares, then you should run the Windows Safe Mode, turn off system restore facility and use Virus Cleaner programs such as Norman Malware Cleaner to clean viruses or malwares and updates to the operating system.
8. Corrupted or even missing System Files.
Typically occurs after the computer is infected with viruses and those infected files are already damaged or deleted by the antivirus program. The easiest solution is to repair the operating system.
9. Hardware overheat.
Hardware overheating, whether it occurs on the hard drive, graphics card, processor orcpu in general can lead to reduced performance of the computer that eventually will cause hang, slow or even frequent restarts to the computer. Make sure that the air circulation on the inside of the CPU is good, as well as the fans must be clean of dust and can rotate smoothly.
10. Connectivity problem on the network.
This can happen due to high network traffic, hub or switch that hangs or any viruses that trying to get into our computer system. To overcome this, try to remove and re-insert the RJ45 connector on the LAN card or LAN rosette, restart the switch/hub and use a port scanner program to see what kind of data packets come in and out of the computer.
Maybe that's a few things on how to overcome the causes of a computer slowdown that I can conclude based on the experience that I encountered frequently, I’ll wait for the additions and corrections from the others...thanks.
